Abstract
Image delineation at full scene resolution can be a very time-consuming task. If the results of delineation at a coarse resolution can be used to guide automatic delineation at progressively finer resolutions, the potential operational savings could be significant. This paper describes such an automated hierarchical system. In this system, the coarse resolution image is first segmented into regions using multiple thresholds. Next, these region labels are used to guide delineation at finer resolution. This step, while preserving the general delineation of the image, restricts the label assignments at fine resolution to only a set of selected pixels, thereby reducing the processing time considerably. The results of applying this procedure to some complex scenes demonstrate not only the effectiveness, but also the cost-saving aspect of the procedure.
