Abstract
The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genome has a characteristic of maternal inheritance, which means the mtDNA can only be inherited by mothers. This is necessary and useful for genetic study because maternal inheritance will hardly suffer crossing over, which means genomes are mainly differentiated by mutations instead of genetic recombination results from sexual reproduction. Since the paternal genetic changes will not be taken into account, the evolutionary observation will be more intuitive, and the analysis will be easier, thus bringing more accurate results. This review focuses on the use of mtDNA sequences to study the genetic population of Lepidopteran insects in China, including separated parts of different kinds of butterflies’ genetic study based on mtDNA sequences, giving the conclusion in phylogenetic studies. Meanwhile, it focuses on the application of mtDNA in different research, including the application of COI and COII, Cytb, some RNA genes, and the AT rich-region which is considered the control region.
