Abstract
Intercepting an object in mid-flight is quite a complex task but we see examples of it in nature all the time. Insects recognize prey, follow it, and intercept it using relatively simple neural systems. At the same time, sophisticated computer algorithms fail to match the degree of robustness and accuracy displayed by insects. This paper provides a scheme to utilize the optic flow characteristics and the geometrical properties of the sensor configuration to perform fast, reliable target tracking, and system stabilization, from crude visual inputs. Artificial neural networks are used to implement the algorithms because of their excellent generalization capabilities which can provide an adequate response in situations where a response would not be expected using conventional computer algorithms.
