Abstract
There has recently been a great deal of interest in the use of light for non-invasive testing in medicine [1], [2]. Possible applications include mammography, investigation of skin cancers and detection of cancerous tissue during surgery. The use of optics in a clinical environment requires compact, robust devices which are possible by using fiber optics. An experimental model of such a device has been built and its response for different experimental conditions studied. Calculations using the diffusion approximation have been used to compare with the experimental results.
