We present an overview of recent developments in the field of machine learning for 2D and 3D data processing. These include deep networks with attention mechanisms, new strategies for segmentation and object extraction, transformers, as well as some methods for novel view synthesis. We will discuss the relevance of these techniques for processing data obtained from both active and passive 3D imaging systems.
