Abstract
We report what to our knowledge is the first theoretical prediction of the efficiency of coupling of a laser diode to an elliptic-core single-mode step-index fiber via a hyperbolic lens on the tip of the fiber. Based on the formulated ABCD matrix for refraction under paraxial approximation, we present analytical expressions for such coupling efficiencies and evaluate them, involving very little computation. Elliptic-core single-mode fibers have already attracted a great deal of attention for their applications in the conservation of polarizations, and so this analysis will be extremely important in coherent optical communications, fiber optic sensors, etc. In addition, if due to constructional problems there is noncircularity in a circular core fiber, such analysis will take care of the resulting noncircularity in the process of designing optimum launch optics.
