Abstract

Reddish-orange emitting Eu³+-activated Ba₃Gd(PO₄)₃ phosphors have been successfully synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction. X-ray powder diffraction confirmed the phase formation. The photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra were investigated. The band gap of Ba₃Gd(PO₄)₃ was estimated to be about 3.68 eV from the diffuse reflection spectrum. The temperature-dependent luminescence of Ba₃Gd(PO₄)₃:Eu³+ was discussed, and the activation energy for thermal quenching was calculated as 1.74 eV. The fluorescence decay curve and the commission internationale de L’Eclairage value of Ba₃Gd(PO₄)₃:Eu³+ phosphors were also investigated in detail. The phosphor presented high color purity. Ba₃Gd(PO₄)₃:Eu³+ might be a promising reddish-orange emitting phosphor used in white light-emitting diodes.35104
