My principal areas of research are quantum photonics, fractal stochastic processes, and computational neuroscience. My current efforts in photonics are directed toward characterizing noise in photon streams, the development of entangled-photon quantum-information systems, and the relative merits of using nonclassical and classical light. My work in fractals is directed toward examining the properties of sensory-system action-potential patterns and the nature of heart-rate variability in patients with coronary dysfunction. I have authored or coauthored some 400 refereed journal articles/book chapters and some 550 conference presentations/lectures, and hold six patents. I am the coauthor of Fundamentals of Photonics (Wiley, 3rd Ed. 2019, 2nd Ed. 2007, 1st Ed. 1991) and of Fractal-Based Point Processes (Wiley, 2005). I am also a consultant to government and private industry, and often serve as an expert in intellectual-property conflicts.
